2009 Henry Brothers Vineyard Cabernet Sauvingon

Vintage   |  2012 2011 2009
Dark red in color, the nose gives aromas of red fruit and cola with vanilla and blackberry in the background. On the palate the arc is seamless, with ripe flavors of blackberry and black cherry filling the mouth. The finish is fresh but goes on and on with flavors of dark red fruit and vanilla. Cellar up to 15 years.

These grapes come from the local St. Helena obstetrician, Brian Henry. His Seventh Day Adventist family goes back three generations in Napa Valley. He, along with his three hardworking sons, felled the trees for this northeastern facing vineyard in Howell Mountain, which is planted with various clones of Cabernet Sauvignon, in addition to Merlot and Petit Verdot.
The fruit was hand harvested and cluster sorted before a two-day cold soak. After inoculation with French yeast, the wine underwent small-batch fermentation, with gentle pumpovers 2-3 times per day. In barrel, the wine underwent malolactic fermentation and was racked twice before bottling in June 2013. The wine will be bottle aged nearly 2 years prior to its release in Spring, 2015.

2011 was a challenging vintage for Napa Valley, but it was no different than a typical Bordeaux vintage, as a late and wet spring crawled into a cool summer. We finally got the heat we had been waiting for, only to play chicken with the rain in October. This was a vintage when it paid to know your producer, because only when the tide goes out do you see who is swimming naked. We are very lucky to work with some amazing, expert growers who did what it took to get fabulous quality in 2011. So while quantity overall was low, the fruit made for well-balanced wines with good intensity, structure and texture with a brightness of flavor.
