The palate is filled with flavor, from ripe, black cherry, and sweet red fruit, to dense cocoa and chestnut cream. The mid-palate is heavy with fruit, finishing with fine grained tannins. HARVEST & WINEMAKING
Harvest 2014 started with the scare of drought. Luckily, some perfectly timed spring rain helped develop nice vineyard canopies to protect the fruit from heat. Likely due to the dry winter we had an early bloom and an even earlier ripening than 2013. Not only that, we had one of the largest earthquakes in decades rock the valley on the eve of harvest. Undeterred, but with many vintners picking up the pieces of broken barrels and spilled wine, harvest 2014 charged on with perfect mild weather through the end of the growing season. This led to high quality grapes and even higher quality wine that we are excited to share.
The Syrah and Merlot grapes come from the Stagecoach Vineyard in the eastern hills above Napa Valley. The Syrah grapes are from French clone 877, and the Merlot grapes are grown in one of the rare flatter parts of Stagecoach vineyard, still on rocky soil. The Petit Verdot is from Henry Brothers vineyard on Howell Mountain. The vineyard is on a rocky, red, steep slope that faces southwest for maximum sun exposure. A portion of the fruit was fermented whole cluster, and some was left on the skins for extended maceration.
